Brief History of Harmar

Harmar Village began in October, 1785 on the west bank confluence of the Ohio and Muskingum Rivers with the establishment of Fort Harmar which was to protect Indians from encroaching settlers. On April 7, 1788 pioneers were allowed to establish the first formal settlement of the Northwest Territory named Marietta. An 828 foot rotating railroad bridge was built over the Muskingum in 1859 connecting Harmar and Marietta. Today the bridge is a pedestrian walk-way.
